First Lutheran was established in 1884 and was called the German Lutheran School. In the beginning the primary purpose was to transmit the German language, culture and Lutheran faith. Pastor Theo Destinon was the first teacher and 32 enrolled students.
The first school building was erected in 1891 east of the church. The same year, the pastor was given permission to teach one-and-half hours instruction in English, a controversial decision at the time.
Pastor C. Dreyer was the school's first resident pastor/teacher who arrived in Glencoe in 1888. The congregation called its first full time teacher, F.W. Friedrich, in 1906.
The school building was moved in 1910 to four lots on 14th Street and a second classroom was added in 1911.
In 1934 the old wood framed school was removed and a brick building with two classrooms, a downstairs meeting room and kitchen was built. Between 1948 and 1950, a two level addition containing three classrooms and an auditorium was built.
Three "Temporary" classrooms were added in 1973 and removed in 2000, when additional classrooms for preschool, kindergarten and first and second grades were built onto the church.
Currently the school has 10 teachers and a principal for Grades 1-8, kindergarten and preschool. It includes all the core academic subjects, organized athletics and a computer lab.

In order to accomplish this in an educational setting, First Lutheran provides a Christ-centered education for the children of First Lutheran congregation and for the churched and unchurched children without distinction to race, social-economic status or religious creed.
Our aim is to provide an education:
A. that is in agreement with the Old and New Testaments which we call the Holy Scriptures and believe to be the inspired Word of God, the only rule of faith and practice;
B. that promotes academic excellence, spiritual depth, and moral integrity, and enables the whole child to develop in a nurturing environment.
C. that trains students in the knowledge of and commitment to the Holy Scriptures as evidenced in word and deed, and enables them to share the Good News with others;
D. that prepares pupils for Godly participation in our society and world through stewardship of God's creation, serving fellowman, responsible citizenship, and the like.
First Lutheran acknowledges the trust placed in the school by its families. First Lutheran holds in high regard the privilege it has been given of ministering to these families and assisting them in the Christian training and nurturing of their children.
The goal of the school is then, to lead each student to develop a strong relationship with his/her Lord and Savior; to develop each student's God-given spiritual, physical, mental, social and artistic gifts to his/her fullest potential; to help each student apply the wisdom of God's kingdom; to exercise Godly dominion over God's creation, and thereby glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
First Ev. Lutheran Church operates a Christian Preschool program. The Christian Preschool is supported by tuition paid by those enrolled.
2013-14 classes for the four-year-olds are four mornings (Monday - Thursday) per week and the three-year-old class meets once on Friday (three year olds have the option attendance on Wed. during the 2nd semester). The purpose of preschool is to provide a transition for young students into formal education as well as to develop the child's desire to learn and socialize with other students his or her age.
Children entering First Lutheran's Preschool must be three or four years old by September 1 for their respective class.
There is a limit of 20 students, due to space and teacher/student teacher ratio. An aide assists in the classroom. If the enrollment goes beyond 20, your child may be placed on a waiting list.
The class begins on the first Thursday after Labor Day. An open house is held before school begins so your child can meet the teacher, see the classroom, meet classmates, and you may arrange any car pools as needed
A registration fee of $60 is required to hold a spot in the program.
There is a limit of 15 students, due to space and teacher/student teacher ratio. An aide assists in the classroom. If the enrollment goes beyond 15, your child may be placed on a waiting list.
The class begins on the first Friday Labor Day. An open house is held before school begins so your child can meet the teacher, see the classroom, meet classmates, and you may arrange any car pools as needed
A registration fee of $25 is required to hold a spot in the program.
Children entering the class must be toilet trained.

• Registration for three (3) is $25 and four (4) year-olds is $60. The fee is non-refundable
• Tuition for the three (3) year-old class is $225 per year. The four (4) year-old class is $825 per year. The tuition may be paid by year, in two semester installments, in four quarterly payments, monthly or by special arrangement with the principal or First Lutheran Church Business Manager.

KINDERGARTEN – GRADE 8
Tuition fees for the 2013-14 school term are as follows:
• $60 Non-refundable Registration Fee for each student if paid by May 1, 2013 ($70 per student if paid AFTER May 1, 2012).
• $60 Non-refundable Registration Fee for each NEW student.
• Member: $1,325 per year for the first child, $1,125 per year for the second child, $925 per year for the third child.
• Community: $2,510 per year for the first child, $2,135 per year for the second child, $1,755 per year for the third child.
• Non-members of sister LCMS (without a Christian Day School) receive a 25% discount.
• All first-time students (kindergarten and transfer students) receive a 10% discount.

Parents may pay by means of electronic transfer. This option requires contacting the Business Manager at the Frist Lutheran Church Office.
Membership at First Lutheran: This means that one or both parents and the children are members of First Ev. Lutheran Church. You may become a member by transferring your membership from another congregation of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS).
If you are not a member of an LCMS congregation, and wish to become a member of First Lutheran, please contact the church office. Membership classes are offered several times a year.
Arrangements for payment are made at the school office with the principal. A Student Aid Fund exists for families needing assistance.

K-8 Curriculum PDF
First Ev. Lutheran School offers subjects commonly taught at the kindergarten,
elementary, and junior high levels.
Kindergartens through fourth grade are basically self-contained.
In grades 5-8, departmental teaching is done in math, science,
English, social studies, and physical education.
All the courses taught meet the educational requirements of the State of Minnesota
and the Glencoe-Silver Lake Public School District. Graduates are admitted to
high schools on the same basis as those who graduate from the public schools.
In keeping with the philosophy of the school, all subjects are taught in the light of God’s
Word. The subject of all religious instruction is the Word of God, both the Law and the
Gospel, as revealed in the God-inspired sacred scriptures, the source and norm of Christian faith.
All students enrolled at First Lutheran take both the confirmation and the homeroom religion classes during 7th and 8th grade, although being confirmed at First Lutheran Church is a decision made by the student and parent.
Each child takes part in daily devotions, weekly chapel services and other religious projects.
Qualified teachers who have been trained in accredited teacher’s colleges staff the school.
Another strength of the school’s curriculum is its on-going review and updating. The faculty studies an area of the academic program each year and then adopts new materials that fit the school’s aims and objectives. Normally, the subjects are updated in a five-year cycle, more frequently if needed. Through a textbook loan program to students, we are able to maintain an academic program of excellent quality taught in a Christian environment.
The areas of learning are:
RELIGION – Worship, Bible Study, catechism, Church History, Life of Christ, Christian Doctrine, Confirmation Instruction, and Church Liturgy.
SOCIAL STUDIES – geography, citizenship, American History, government, current events, and community life.
LANGUAGE ARTS – phonics, English, grammar, spelling, literature, handwriting, speaking, and creative writing, and listening.
GENERAL SCIENCE/COMPUTER – the physical world, physiology, plant and animal life, human anatomy, astronomy, ecology, energy, and computer programming.
MATHEMATICS – fundamental concepts, general math, basic computation, functional math, algebra, and geometry.
WRITING – note taking, summarizing, style, narrative stories, creative, essay and critique.
FINE ARTS – singing, choirs, band, music, art appreciation, drawing, sketching, painting, and crafts.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH – physical fitness, game knowledge, rhythm skills, first aid, sportsmanship, and team games.
This is a truly exciting time, as we continue to enter the new age of technology. First Lutheran has added Mimio (similar to Smart) Boards to eight of the classrooms at a cost of over $20,000. It is our hope to finish this project and begin adding iPad technology beginning next year. We are asking you, as a parent, grandparent, former student, and friends of FLS for continued support. Since 2008 over $90,000 has been received in the "FLS to Keep It Happening Fund."

During the school year FLS families are asked to participate, if they choose, in various fund-raising activities. All fund-raising programs are done on an optional volunteer basis. During the year these activities generate additional funding for the school in the range of $13,000 to $16,000. Below is a list of some of the activities scheduled for the year. Student Aid and Ponath Scholarship
These programs allow children to enroll at First Lutheran who otherwise may not be able to afford the tuition.
The purpose of this policy is to assure a school environment that promotes and protects students’ health, well-being, and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity.
II. GENERAL STATEMENT OF POLICY
A. The school board recognizes that nutrition education and physical education are essential components of the educational process and that good health fosters student attendance and education, and that helpful eating and physical activity can have a positive impact on student behavior.
B. The school environment should promote and protect students’ health, well being, and ability to learn by encouraging healthy eating and physical activity.
C. The school encourages the involvement of students, parents, teachers, food service staff and other interested persons in implementing, monitoring, and reviewing school nutrition and physical activity policies.
D. Children need access to healthy foods and opportunities to be physically active in order to grow, learn, and thrive.
E. All students in Pre-school through grade 8 will have opportunities, support, and encouragement to be physically active on a regular basis.
F. Qualified food service personnel will provide students with access to a variety of affordable, nutritious, and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of students; try to accommodate the religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity Of the student body in meal planning.
A. Foods and Beverages
1. Food service personnel will take every measure to ensure that student access to foods and beverages meet or exceed all federal, state, and local laws and guidelines.
2. Food service personnel shall adhere to all federal, state, and local food safety and security guidelines.
3. The school will make every effort to eliminate any social stigma attached to, and prevent the overt identification of; students who are eligible for free and reduced-price school meals.
4. The school will provide students access to hand washing or hand sanitizing before they eat meals or snacks and students should be encouraged to use such facilities.
5. The school will make every effort to provide students with sufficient time to eat after sitting down for school meals and will make every effort to schedule meal periods at appropriate times during the school day.
6. The school will discourage tutoring, club, or organizational meetings or activities during mealtimes, unless students may eat during such activities
B. School Food Service Program/Personnel
1. The school will provide healthy and safe school meal programs that strictly comply with all federal, state, and local statutes and regulations.
2. The school shall designate the head cook to be responsible for the school’s food service program, whose duties shall include the creation of nutrition guidelines and procedures for the selection of foods and beverages made available to ensure food and beverage choices are consistent with current USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
3. As part of the school’s responsibility to operate a food service program, the school will provide continuing professional development for all food service personnel.
C. Nutritional Education and Promotion
The school will encourage and support healthy eating by students and engage in nutrition promotion that
offered as part of a comprehensive program designated to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote and protect their health;
part of health education classes and in other classes where appropriate.
The school will encourage all students to make age appropriate, healthy selections of foods and beverages.
D. Physical Activity
1. Students need opportunities for physical activity and to fully embrace regular physical activity as a personal behavior. Toward that end, health education will reinforce the knowledge and self-management skills needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle and reduce sedentary activities such as watching television and playing video games.
2. Opportunities for physical activity will be incorporated into other subject lessons, where appropriate.
E. Communications with Parents
1. The school recognizes that parents and guardians have a primary and fundamental role in promoting and protecting their children’s’ health and well being.
2. The school will support parents’ efforts to provide a healthy diet and daily physical activity for their children.
3. The school encourages parents to pack healthy lunches and snacks and refrain from including beverages and foods without nutritional value.
4. The school will provide information about physical education and other school-based physical activity opportunities and will support parents’ efforts to provide their children with opportunities to be physically active outside of school.
5. The school newsletter and school site newsletters may be used to communicate to parents and guardians about the school’s Food and Beverage Guidelines, Nutrition Education Guidelines, and Physical Education and Activity Guidelines.
IV. IMPLEMENTATION AND MONITORING
A. The head cook will ensure compliance within the school’s food service and will report to the principal.
B. The head cook will provide an annual report to the principal setting forth the nutrition guidelines and procedures for selection of all foods made available in school.
C. The principal or designee will ensure compliance with the wellness policy.
